How do I change my address with the IRS?

There are several ways to notify the IRS of an address change.

1. On your tax return

If you change your address on your tax return, the IRS will update your records.

2. Notifying your local post office

You should notify the post office that services your old address to ensure that your mail is forwarded. The IRS will be notified of your new addresss.

3. Complete IRS change of address form

You can may complete a Form 8822, Change of Address form and mail it the appropriate address as listed on page 2 of the form.

4. Write a letter to the IRS

Send a letter to the IRS service center where you file your tax return. You can inform the IRS that your address has changed. Be sure to include the following:

  • full name
  • old and new addresses
  • social security number, individual taxpayer identification number, or employer identification number, and
  • signature

It can take four to six weeks for the IRS to process a change of address request.
