How do I get a person on the phone at irs?

To contact the  IRS about your personal tax account, you should follow these steps:

  1. Have your current year and prior year tax returns with you
  2. If you’re calling about notice, have a copy of the notice with you
  3. Then call 1-800-829-1040

To avoid long hold times, call as early in the morning as possible. Telephone customer service representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.

Note that the IRS will only speak with the taxpayer or their legally designated representative. You cannot call about someone else’s account without a valid power of attorney.

  1. I am having the exact same issue. No word or records. I had to mail it, since it was the previous years return. (I got this years return right away)

  2. I filed my 1040 on April 20, 2022 via the U.S.P.S. The I.R.S. has no record of my return as of 07/06/2022. I was told to call if this was over 6 weeks ago, yet there is no number to start this process. Should I just re-file and send it in again?
