To contact the IRS about your personal tax account, you should follow these steps:
- Have your current year and prior year tax returns with you
- If you’re calling about notice, have a copy of the notice with you
- Then call 1-800-829-1040
To avoid long hold times, call as early in the morning as possible. Telephone customer service representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.
Note that the IRS will only speak with the taxpayer or their legally designated representative. You cannot call about someone else’s account without a valid power of attorney.
